The Philippines is the first in Southeast Asia and the 34th in the world to launch its local version of the video-sharing site YouTube.
Officially unveiled today, October 13, 2011, Thursday, at the Blue Leaf Tent in Taguig City, YouTube will now offer a localized flavor of the video site and will aggregate contents that are relevant to the Filipinos.
Pinoy YouTube singing sensations Charice and Arnel Pineda were also cited noting their rose to fame by showcasing their talent on YouTube. Charice even sent a video message for the event.
YouTube Philippines partners with media giants ABS-CBN, GMA and TV5 to provide TV program contents which will surely add more viewers to the Google-owned video-sharing site. Filipino Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (Filscap) and Procter and Gamble were also signed as local content providers.
President Noynoy Aquino III’s two YouTube channels were also launched in the event – Official Gazette and Radio, TV Malacanang. PNoy will also take part of the World View live interview on November 4 where he’ll answer questions directly coming from the citizens on YouTube.
“The Philippine online population is even bigger than the actual population of most countries in Southeast Asia,” Julian Persaud, managing director for Google Southeast Asia noted.
Adam Smith, head of YouTube for Asia Pacific, added that Filipinos upload tremendous amount of videos to YouTube – also one of the highest daily averages among Internet users.
