An urgent call to all Windows users who still have QuickTime installed on their computers. Global security firm Trend Micro reported recently that Apple’s QuickTime for Windows is open for vulnerability exploits now that Apple is no longer providing security updates for the said software.
According to the report, this issue is only limited to QuickTime for Windows. Apple will still continue to support the software on its Mac OSX platform.
It is also worth sharing that users of QuickTime for Windows who refused to ignore this call will be directly affected by two new critical vulnerabilities released by Zero Day Initiative – ZDI-16-241 and ZDI-16-242. While there’s still yet to be reported any known attacks leveraging these vulnerabilities, it’s still advisable to uninstall QuickTime the soonest time possible.
The two new critical vulnerabilities, per Trend Micro, “would require a user to visit a malicious web page or open a malicious file to exploit them.”
Apple, on the other hand, has yet to release any official statement regarding QuickTime for Windows.
