You’ve probably read the buzz about BlackBerry offering their exclusive messenger service, BBM, to other mobile operating systems – Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. Announced yesterday by CEO Thorsten Heins, BBM’s availability outside BlackBerry is initially slated this July.
BlackBerry Messenger or BBM as we popular call it will be available soon on Android 4.0, iOS 6 and later versions and the service will still be free. According to company executives in the BlackBerry Live Conference, this move is to expand their growing customers and to let other users from other platforms experience BlackBerry.
Similar to its would-be competitors, WhatsApp, Viber and WeChat among others, BBM will now allow other mobile users to connect with their BlackBerry counterparts.
Per reports, BBM has 60 million active users worldwide to date. With the expansion of the service to non-BlackBerry handsets, it will definitely make their userbase stronger than ever.
