Finally, Smart Communications is bringing Foursquare applications to the Philippines via SMS.

We all know that Foursquare can only be accessed via smartphone applications and web. And though smartphones and wap-enabled phones are rampant nowadays, there are some who are still using the old-fashioned units and would also want to update their locations using Foursquare. Fortunately, Smart is giving them the access to Foursquare even without using the internet.

Personally, I’m happy that Smart offered this service. As a Foursquare addict, this one is a great way to continue enjoying the social network. Plus, the service only costs you Php 1 for every checkin!

I tried registering to the service and it seems okay. I also tried checking in and the got a response from the system. Pretty cool!

I just have a few concerns on this Foursquare SMS. Are check ins using the SMS gateway deprived you of mayorships and other limitations experienced by users using the web-based app? How accurate the system is when it comes to locating our venues specially if we’re checking in to places with common or popular brands such as McDonald’s, Starbucks etc?

I’ll be posting some updates as to the questions I raised above but certainly, the SMS service is a great option to all of us.
