Smart officially releases nano-SIM for PhP40

After Globe Telecom, competitor Smart Communications announced today that the company will start selling nano-SIM, the SIM card format that supports the soon-to-be-launched iPhone 5 (locally). The Manny Pangilinan-led telco offers their own nano-SIM in prepaid for only PhP40. Reports also confirmed that a SmartBro variant of the SIM is also coming soon.

The Smart nano-SIM was first seen the night after Apple officially announced iPhone 5. Mr. Elijah Mendoza, Smart Communications’ Senior Public Affairs Officer, first posted the first look of the nano-SIM on his Facebook timeline as reported by TechPinas.

For postpaid subscribers who are interested in getting the iPhone 5 in the Smart network and prefer to use the same contact number, the network is offering a free SIM card replacement to nano-SIM. This is similar to their offering to their postpaid users when the network first offered the iPhone 4S in the country.

While both Globe and Smart are now ready to serve the iPhone 5 market should the phone got released in the country soon, there are still no further reports as to when Apple is bringing the most antipated smartphone in the country.

Meanwhile, for those in Smart prepaid who’d want to use their same contact number may still use it on iPhone 5 provided that they have it cut to the standard nano-SIM size. The SIM should still work the same.
