Globe Prepaid’s On The List leaks registration info

Globe Prepaid’s On The List Site

Local telco giant Globe Telecom is now the subject of a recent data blunder after the company reportedly sent out email notifications containing someone else’s personal information. Privacy blogger Ray Walsh of BestVPN.com first picked up the news over the weekend

According to those affected, it all started from a text message from Globe informing recipients that they were pre-qualified to be part of On The List, an exclusive community of Globe Prepaid users.

To entice subscribers, registered members will have a chance to win tickets to watch the Kpop band BlackPink. The registration link redirects users to a page that would ask for customers’ complete name, their Globe prepaid mobile number, email address, city, complete address and birthday. While there was a privacy consent at the top of the registration field and a link to the company’s data privacy policy, a data breach still happened.

Those who were able to register said that they received an email from Globe confirming their registration. However, the said email contains personal information of other registrants. We were not able to get a hold of that controversial email but it must have the same information required during the registration phase.

Globe has yet to release an official statement regarding this privacy incident but a quick check on Twitter revealed that their social media account has been replying to some of the users who are reporting the incident. Affected users were also advised to lodge a complaint through the National Privacy Commission (NPC).

We will try to reach out to Globe’s Data Protection Officer to get their statement regarding this. As soon as we get valuable feedback, we’ll keep this article updated.

***Update***

Globe Telecom’s Official Statement

January 29, 2019 – Globe released an official statement saying that they have “rectified the issue” and, notified NPC and the affected customers of the incident. NPC’s Official Statement

January 29, 2019 – NPC, through Commissioner Raymund E. Liboro, also released an official statement confirming that Globe Telecom indeed notified them regarding the data breach last January 27, Sunday. Their team is now evaluating the incident.

Globe files complaint against Caritas Shield text spammers

globe_text_spam_caritas_shield

Globe subscribers, particularly those in postpaid, are being bombarded with text spams on a daily basis. Users have been constantly complaining about taking legal actions against spammers who leverage on unregistered prepaid SIMs and unlimited text promos. Recently, Globe officially files a complaint with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) against Caritas Shield whose agents are found to be abusing the text messaging service.

Last year, when the Ayala-led telco launched its online forum called Globe Community, one of the top threads are customer complaints against text spammers. To address the growing concern, Globe educated users on proper ways in dealing with these spammers which started early this year.

As of last month,  the network barred a total of 384 mobile numbers associated to text spams. The campaign to track these spammers are now made easy as customers can easily report it via Talk2Globe Chat, @Talk2Globe Twitter account using #StopSPAM or by filling out the Globe Contact Form. Globe users should include the number, the exact message, and the time and date the text spam was received. Prior to this, consumers complaining against text spammers had to directly contact NTC to make a formal report.

This move against Caritas Shield might just be a first from the numerous companies and/or organizations who are using the text messaging platform to spam mobile users. Globe should do the same with condo/real estate, loan and credit card companies/agents who have the same marketing strategy. The public is also encouraged to proactively report all text spams so the network can track and make a report against it. Hopefully, Smart and Sun Cellular will follow the same step to protect their subscribers as well.

Samsung Galaxy Data SIM: A first of its kind

Samsung_Galaxy_Data_SIM

You’ve probably heard ABS-CBN Mobile entering the local telecommunications industry to offer more than the usual call and text offers of the giant networks. This time, global phone manufacturer Samsung joined the local telco players by introducing the first exclusive mobile branded SIM – the Samsung Galaxy Data SIM.

Similar to ABS-CBN Mobile, Samsung Galaxy Data SIM is powered by Globe Telecom. As its name suggests, the new data SIM is bundled for free with selected Samsung smartphones and tablets available from participating Samsung Experience Stores, kiosks and other local distributors. Basically, it’s a prepaid data SIM.

Samsung Galaxy Data SIM also offers call and text promos on top mobile Internet. Since it’s backed by Globe, it’s offerings are inline with the current offerings of the Ayala-led network tailored to Samsung-branded gadgets and users.

Samsung Galaxy Data SIM was first introduced late last year but didn’t make much noise probably because there’s no wide spread marketing campaign made. Also, there are no new stuff on it that makes it different from other SIM cards unlike with ABS-CBN Mobile data SIM where users can watch Kapamilya shows via streaming.

At this point, Samsung has not yet released any official plans whether to continue the Samsung Galaxy Data SIM or not. If Samsung Philippines is really interested in the local telco market, we’ll be seeing more features of the SIM coming out soon!

Globe Community: Newest Channel to Serve Telco Customers

Globe strives to help its growing userbase with all inquiries and concerns by putting up a new channel to reach out customers – the Globe Community.

Globe Community is a forum online powered by Lithium that empowers all users to collaborate and share tips and experiences of being a Globe subscriber.

Rather than lining up in a Globe store or wait over-the-phone until you reached a support representative to get you assisted, Globe is maximizing the power of Internet and social media to easily connect with the customers.

While it’s true that Globe’s attempt to personalize support experience by putting Twitter frontline representatives is a success, the network still believes that there’s more to offer in terms of customer service. Thus, rather than being complacent with the current service channels, the Ayala-led network unveiled Globe Community to empower each users to communicate to each other at the same time extend help to one another by merely sharing their first-hand experiences to troubled fellow subscribers.

Globe also rewards those active community members by setting up a ranking system that ‘game-ify’ the traditional forum format. There’s a ‘Thumbs Up’ feature that works like a ‘like’ button of Facebook. If you find a specific solution applicable and suits best to your concern, there’s an ‘Accept as Solution’ option as well. All these including the number of messages you’ve posted can unlock a certain level that can eventually give you privileges. Globe currently keeps these privileges secret as a surprise to those who can unlock these ranks.

So, if you have some concerns about your Globe and TM accounts or just wants to help others who are in trouble, go ahead and register to Globe Community. Enjoy!

Globe intensifies LTE coverage, fires up more sites

Globe Telecom has intensified its 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) service as it activates more LTE sites across the country, giving its subscribers more reasons to enjoy superfast mobile connectivity in its network.

Initially offered in the City of Makati, Globe has steadily increased its LTE coverage by bolstering its LTE infrastructure in key cities of Metro Manila as well as major areas outside the metropolis. These include Pasig City, Quezon City, Taguig, City of Manila, Muntinlupa City, as well as Cebu City and Boracay in Malay, Aklan in the Visayas. Within these locales, the company has switched-on its LTE signal in some of the major avenues, villages and subdivisions, business districts, upscale malls, hotels, busy commercial zones, government offices, schools, sporting arenas and hospitals, as well as the premier tourist destination Boracay.

In an interview, Globe President & CEO Ernest Cu said that the LTE philosophy of Globe is to let their subscribers go around contiguous areas without having to lose their LTE signal: “We don’t want them to be constrained in a specific LTE spot and be cut-off after stepping out of there. The Globe LTE coverage lets them freely walk around places they frequent such as malls, offices and the like and still receive our LTE signal seamlessly.”

The Globe chief said that the company’s LTE expansion will quickly cover more ground across the Philippines as the first phase of its modernization nears completion with its new network primed for LTE, and will be supported by the ongoing rollout of over 12,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable spanning the archipelago.

According to Globe Chief Technical Advisor Robert Tan, this development further bolsters the company’s 4G network as it introduced technologies in anticipation of the incremental demand for mobile data.

“We have continued to expand our LTE coverage as we focus on large, contiguous areas, instead of “pocket activations” and “hot spots” to ensure greater and more stable coverage for customers,” confirmed Tan. “With the Globe LTE, we have upped the ante in terms of internet connectivity by as much as 42 Mbps, currently the fastest available there is now.”

Since fourth quarter of last year, Globe subscribers with LTE-powered gadgets such as the premium mobile broadband Tattoo Black and the first commercially-available LTE handset in the country, the Huawei Ascend P1, have been enjoying internet connections at breakneck speeds via the Globe LTE. Meanwhile, those armed with the iPhone 5, iPad 3 and the iPad mini which have recently made available their LTE connectivity through iOS upgrades can now experience ultrafast Globe LTE on their Apple devices.

Globe was first to introduce 4G technology in the Philippines with its WiMax network in 2009 and during that same year, it collaborated with SingTel to test 4G LTE in the country which was able to register speeds of up to 100 Mbps. In 2011, Globe gave its subscribers their first HSPA+ signal. Mobile 4G LTE for handsets was already active as of late last year, supporting voice and SMS.
