Television app TVTag, previously known as GetGlue, announced Friday, December 26, that they are shutting down the service come January 1, 2015.

It can be remembered that earlier this year, GetGlue has been rebranded as TVTag after being acquired by i.TV in late 2013. The acquisition promised several feature upgrades but looks like fans of the original app didn’t get along well with the new app forcing the service to shutdown.

In an e-mail sent to its current users, TVTag said that they’re “grateful for all of your support over the last four years. You’ve helped us build an incredible community of fellow TV fans.” The message was also posted on their website and social media accounts.

TVTag also allows its users to save and archive their data by requesting its copy via daterequest@tvtag.com. Interested users are advised to include their username in the subject line when requesting a copy.

For the loyal users of the original GetGlue app, this recent turn of event isn’t surprising but one user nailed it with his Twitter post:

For users who are into ‘check-ins’, a similar app called TVShow Time is offering their service to disappointed TVTag users. For instance, they may be able to import your TVTag data.

We haven’t personally tried this yet but we’ll keep you posted if this is indeed possible. And for the movies? We’re still on the look out for the best app out there.
