Nokia finally unveiled its first Android smartphone series called “Windroid” at the 2014 Mobile World Congress.

Nokia, one of the world’s leading mobile phone manufacturer, had been associated with Microsoft’s Windows phone operating system (OS) since 2011 replacing the now defunct Symbian OS. There were reports about them creating a different variant using Google’s Android OS to expand their market and that has just been confirmed at the recent tech event.

Dubbed as “Windroid”, the new Nokia Android-powered smartphones are quite different from the regular Android phones in the market. As the name suggests, Nokia’s Windroids are Android phones configured to have Windows features present on the other Nokia smartphones.

Windroids are quite interesting considering that Windows and Android belong to two competing mother companies – Microsoft and Google.

The first Windroids are Nokia X, Nokia X+ and Nokia XL – the entry level, mid-range and high-end product offerings of the Finnish company.

Nokia X, which is also the official name of the Windroid OS, uses Android 4.1 as a base with the addition of Asha and Windows phone elements. The phone will be able to run Android apps but it won’t have a direct access to the Play Store.

The Nokia X variant has a 4-inch screen and a dual core 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The mid-range Nokia X+ has a larger internal memory which can be still expanded with the addition of a micro SD card slot. The largest of the three, Nokia XL, has a 5-inch screen, a 5 megapixel rear camera and a 2 megapixel front camera.

Initial reports quoted that these new Nokia Android smartphones will be sold at $122 or more but no definite time yet with regard to its release in the market.
