Leading mobile operator, Smart Communications, launched Wikipedia Zero to bring free knowledge access to Filipinos.

Similar to other previous initiatives that brings free access to sites and apps such as Google, Facebook, Twitter and Waze, this new service offered by the network in partnership with Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization that operates Wikipedia, won’t be billed against your plan or prepaid credits when accessed. The service will also be available on Smart’s sister companies Talk ‘N Text and Sun Cellular.

“We have always looked for and promoted ways to use technology and mobile communications to drive learning and consequently, development. Wikipedia Zero is relevant in a country where access to both computer terminals and Internet connectivity is still relatively low, but where almost everyone owns a cellphone. We are excited to bring Wikipedia Zero to the country and help create a way to make learning more accessible to millions of Filipinos,” said Ramon R. Isberto, head of Public Affairs at Smart.

Wikipedia, the world’s largest online encyclopedia, will now be available to Smart, Talk ‘N text and Sun Cellular’s 68.9 million total subscribers starting September 5 until February 5, 2015. Under Wikipedia Zero, subscribers have to access the site via m.wikipedia.org, zero.wikipedia.org or via their official apps available in iOS and Android devices.
